What our students say
"I started my BJJ journey 3 years ago at the age of 47. I spotted an advert for an introduction to BJJ beginners course on Facebook. I was always involved in the more extreme side of sports in my younger days and just thought why not, what have I got to lose. I just thought it's 8 weeks and I will give it a try. 3 years later I am still giving it a go. Nomad Jiujitsu have been nothing but welcoming, patient and allowed me to progress and grow at a pace that works for my age and physicality. The coaches have given time and instruction and often taken time out of their busy lives just to help me improve. The club is very friendly and welcoming and I have always felt part of it. The only thing I could say say is I wished I had done years ago. No matter your age, sex or physicality this club has a place for you and will help you grow and love the sport."

"I joined the beginners’ BJJ course at Nomad in January 2025 with no martial arts experience at all, I just knew my Saturday football days were over and needed something new. The classes were welcoming, well structured, and everyone is in the same position so you don’t feel lost. What kept me coming back to Nomad after the beginners course is how helpful the coaches & other members are. There are no egos in the group, which put all my worries about potential injury to bed. Nomad is a safe space to learn, you never feel stupid for not knowing something, and there’s no pressure to perform or get results as someone new to the sport. I’d highly recommend the beginners’ course to anyone thinking about starting BJJ, or anyone who’s just looking for something to keep their body & mind active."
Alistair, 30 (Beginners Course 2025)
"I joined the gym after watching my kids train and have so much fun, which inspired me to give BJJ a try myself. I started with the beginner course and found it really easy to get into — you don’t need to be super fit or have any previous experience. I wasn’t in great shape at the time, but the training is structured so that even if you’re not particularly fit, you can join in, go at your own pace, and enjoy every session.
BJJ can feel intimidating at first. You might worry about getting hurt, looking clumsy, or keeping up with others. For me, it didn’t feel very natural at first, and I was a bit nervous about being grabbed and handled during drills. But the team makes training feel safe, respectful, and supportive from day one.
As a parent, the culture of the gym really matters to me. I wouldn’t keep my family training here if I wasn’t confident in the people and the environment. It’s been great being part of a team that values learning, respect, support, and community, and I’m really glad we joined."

The beginners course isn’t the only way to start your BJJ journey so you don't have to wait until the next course starts. You’re also welcome to book a free trial class and jump straight into our regular sessions. While these aren’t dedicated beginner classes, you’ll still receive the same warm welcome, expert coaching and supportive training environment. Our members love meeting new teammates and are always happy to share their skills. After all, they were once beginners too and know exactly how daunting it can feel stepping on the mats for the first time.
Hopefully we'll see you on the mat soon!
