Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was originally developed as a self-defence martial art by the Gracie family in 1925. It was made famous by Royce Gracie who dominated in the early days of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), beating opponents skilled in Wrestling, Boxing, Muay Thai/Kick Boxing, Karate and even Sumo Wrestling.
Unlike most mainstream martial arts like Karate, Judo, Kung-fu and kick boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) emphasises on taking an opponent to the ground and dominating with technique instead of power, leading to submission using joint lock & choke holds.
Many techniques in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are seen in other grappling sports such as Judo, Sambo, free-style wrestling and Catch wrestling (CACC). BJJ may have originated for self-defence, but in recent years has developed into one of the fastest growing contact sports in the world.
